Other Helpful Tips

  • Measure your lawn. Before purchasing fertilizer measure and multiply the length times the width of your lawn to determine total square feet.

  • Spreading fertilizer. Use a walk behind or shoulder type rotary spreader to apply. Because these bags of product cover a large area, set your spreader on a light setting and cover the lawn area going back and forth in one direction. Then adjust your spreader as necessary to cover the lawn area again with the remaining product, going in a opposite direction. Spreading the granules this way will ensure even coverage over the lawn.

  • Test soil. To readily absorb nutrients applied and for optimum turf health, Fescue grass prefers a slightly acid to neutral soil ranging from 6.5 to 7.5 on the pH scale. If you haven't done so in the past two years, test for soil pH to determine whether your soil is acid, neutral or alkaline. If your soil is too acid (below 6.5 pH) you can apply pelletized limestone to "sweeten" the soil. If your soil is too alkaline (above 7.5 pH) you can apply Hi-Yield Iron Plus to reduce alkalinity. Soil test kits can be purchased at the Nursery or online here.
