(Euonymus japonica 'Aureo Marginata')
Golden Euonymus Feeding Instructions
Fertilize this evergreen shrub in Spring (after new growth has begun to emerge), and again, if needed, in late Summer to early Fall with a well-balanced tree and shrub fertilizer or an organic plant food. When in dought as to how much fertilizer to apply, follow instructions on the product label.
Golden Euonymus Pruning Instructions
This evergreen shrub requires no pruning. However, during any time of year it is okay to remove stray or broken branches, or shear to maintain a neater appearance. Hand-pruning, with sharp hand pruners, is recommended. Pruning with electric or gas-powered hedge trimmers can cause unsightly scarring of leaves.
Golden Euonymus Pest Instructions
This evergreen shrub is generally low maintenance, however, it is susceptible to Euonymus scale, an insect. Heavy infestations are clearly visible from some distance away. Affected foliage appears to have small white cottony spots. Leaves eventually turn yellow and die as feeding continues. Large numbers congregate on the undersides of leaves, twigs, and stems. At the first sign of scale, prune affected foliage and discard. Prune heavily infested branches to the soil surface. A dormant spray in early spring, before the buds have started to open, will decrease the scale population but also may defoliate the plant. New leaves will rapidly replace those lost. Apply labeled insecticides such as carbaryl (Sevin), malathion or Hi-Yield acephate to control crawlers. Reapply as needed in late August to early September to control second generation crawlers.
