Gardening in the shade doesn't have to be frustrating. There are many perennial plants that will tolerate relatively low light, and a few, such as Cast Iron Plant that will thrive in total shade.

There are many perennials that are very easy to grow in shady areas of the garden. The many varieties of Hosta lilies, hardy ferns, and Heucheras are just a few. Though not listed below, Vinca Minor (Periwinkle) is an evergreen groundcover that does great in the shade and helps to tie together all of the other plants in the shade garden. Hosta lilies and other perennials will pop right through Vinca in the Spring.

Not all shade-loving perennial plants require all day shade. Many will tolerate morning sun as long as there is shade in the afternoon. The trick to successfull shade gardening with perennials is to know which plants are most likely to succeed.
