Elijah Blue Fescue is one of the hardiest and best of the blue fescues, featuring clumps of instense blue, thin, grassy foliage 10-12" tall with an equal spread. Light green flowers with a purple tinge are produced in Summer that turn to beige seed heads. Some find the seed heads attractive, others prune them off. Useful as a colorful groundcover, border edger, accent in the rock garden, or in container plantings, alone or as an accent. Drought tolerant. Best color with more sun.

Elijah Blue Fescue is tolerant of poor, dry soil so requires very little if any fertilization. If you do fertilize Blue Fescue, use a slow-release, organic plant food in early Spring, after cutting last year's foliage back to 3-4" above the ground.

Elijah Blue Fescue (Ornamental Grass) Pruning Instructions

Cut back foliage in early Spring to 3-4" to tidy clumps and to facilitate emergence of the new leaf blades. Flower stems can be sheared of after bloom, however this is not necessary. Clumps may decline in hot, humid summers, and should be cut back if such occurs. If a clump dies out in the center it can be divided and replanted.

Elijah Blue Fescue (Ornamental Grass) Pest Instructions

Elijah Blue Fescue is not prone to any serious pest or disease problems, though it does suffer from consistently damp or wet soils. To avoid premature die-out, plant Elijah Blue Fescue in average to poor soils that are well-drained and on the dry side. As with many other ornamental grasses, harsh winters may cause browning of foliage. Simply cut back all foliage to 3-4" in early Spring to facilitate emergence of new growth.
