(Juniperus horizontalis 'Bar Harbor')
Bar Harbor Juniper Feeding Instructions
Fertilize this groundcover plant after new growth emerges in Spring with a well-balanced, slow-release, "nursery-type" fertilizer, or a non-burning natural or organic fertilizer suitable for evergreen plants. For groundcover that covers a large area, it may be necessary to broadcast fertilizer with a shoulder-type or hand-held broadcast spreader. Of course you can always broadcast by hand, but this method doesn't always distribute fertilizer as evenly. You can fertilize thereafter, lightly, on an as needed basis. Irrigating after fertilizing helps water in the nutrients, and can prevent burning on newly emerging leaves. If you are ever in doubt as to how much fertilizer to apply, refer to product label for application rates and instruction.
Bar Harbor Juniper Pruning Instructions
If desired, cut foliage back to the ground after flowering to rejuvenate the foliage. Large areas of ajuga can be trimmed with a lawn mower. Small patches should be trimmed with pruning shears or a "weed-eater" trimmer. Where not wanted, keep runners trimmed back before they take root. Keep an eye out for reversion in variegated cultivars like this particular plant. Occasionally, a shoot will emerge that is all green (it is reverting back to the original species.) If this happens, weed it out since it is much more vigorous and will eventually take over the clump, smothering the slower growing variegated plants.
Bar Harbor Juniper Pest Instructions
This plant is generally not prone to serious pest or disease problems. In the event that a pest or disease problem occurs, treat with a product containing neem oil. Neem oil is a safe, triple-action product that can be used to control insects, mites and diseases. Always refer to product label for proper application instructions, and to see if your plant can safely be treated with product.
