Espalier Plants

Little Gem Magnolias grown flat against a wall (espalier) You might be asking: what is espalier? Espalier is the term used to describe a plant or tree that has been trained to grow in a flattened pattern against a wall, fence or partition. Espalier is a useful technique to decorate solid, windowless walls on homes or buildings.

To the right is an image of two Little Gem Magnolia trees that have been trained to grow flat against a tall wall. Many shrubs and trees can be useful as espalier to turn what would be an otherwise boring blank wall into a pleasant visual asset. Before selecting a plant or tree to use for espalier, make sure the mature height of the plant matches the height of the wall.

Below is a listing of popular plants which are useful for espalier.
