Disease Control in Lawns
Controlling disease in the lawn is not something we like doing, however, during hot, humid rainy times of the year fungus can and often will develop in the lawn - particularly those that are not maintained properly.
Before treating your lawn for a fungus or disease always consult with your local professional nurseryman or County Extention Agent for a diagnosis and appropriate methods for treatment.
Lawn Disease Prevention and Control Tips
- Water or irrigate your lawn in the morning hours to allow any water on turf to dry during the day. Water left standing overnight on turf can and probably will cause development of fungus and disease.
- Plant your lawn in well-drained soils to avoid root rot and other diseases caused by wet feet. There are now turf grasses that we know of suitable for growing in consistently wet soil - and who would want to trudge through the muck to cut it?
- Make sure you select the right lawn grass for your climate and soil type.
- Mow grass only when dry.
- Mow lawn frequently to avoid clumping of discharged clippings. Do not leave clumps of grass clippings in the lawn - rake them up and add them to your compost pile.
- When a fungus such as brown or dollar spot appears, avoid mowing or walking through effected areas as this can spread fungus all over the lawn. At first signs of dead or dying spots, consult with your local nurseryman. Purchase and treat for fungus immediately. A stitch in time saves nine! Always follow intruction on product label for mixing and application method.
